This makes it important for the government to have an efficient Indian forest management system. Traveling from one end of the country to the other you find around 16 types of forests, ranging from dry zone forests to the Himalayan ranges. However, one major threat to the natural wealth of the country is deforestation.

While there is a great demand for forest resources, people are destroying this natural wealth. Hence it is important on the part of the government to manage forests in an efficient manner. This is why the government has come up with a national forest policy wherein the forests are treated as the national wealth. After independence, the government has come up with a new forest policy in 1988. The emphasis in this policy is to take care of the local needs first and then adhere to the national needs.
