Established as Imperial Forest Research Institute in 1906, Forest Research Institute (FRI) Dehradun, is a premier institution under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE).It is one of the oldest institutions of its kind. In 1991, it had been declared a deemed university by the University Grants Commission.
The Forest Research Institute was conferred with the status of a Deemed to be University in December 1991 by the Government of India on recommendation of the UGC.
The University aims at spreading the results of research and higher education in the forestry sector to the young students through post graduation and diplomas in forestry and allied sciences.
The Institute caters, in particular, to the research needs of the Indo-Gangetic plains of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh, as Well as the U.P. Himalayas. Forestry research at the FRI is organized under fourteen divisions.
